Hey all,
I've decided to jump the gun and go into freelancing, full-time. I'm 24M. I've always realized that I simply can't do the 9-5 grind. Even after doing a paid internship for 4 months- I knew that freelancing would give me more time, money, and leverage & opportunity to make even more money.
As of now, I'm making around $2k per month as a freelance designer. I have around $8k saved up, and now going full-force into freelance and running other online businesses. This means more time to make even more money.
I've done a bit of calculation and I can survive comfortably on around $1750/month (Canadian). That includes rent, food, transportation and other expenses. My goal is to save up and buy my own condo.
That translates into a couple freelance projects per month, which I'm confident I can secure as I gain more clients and referrals.
For those in a similar situation; what are some issues you faced or things you had to look for? Any tips or advice for me?

Yeah. Me. I was once like you. Started at 25, ten years ago. Couple pieces of advice:
- Maintain, nurture and grow your network. That means traveling to Winnipeg and Charlotte and God-knows-where as much as working in a mountain chalet in the Alps. I go to 4 conferences a year - more now because I have people working for me - and I see each of my clients at least once. Work it into your year and business should keep coming to you.
- Be an expert at what you do. That means specializing and learning. Constantly. Employees can often coast on their skills. You can’t.
- You’ll have shitty years with no work. It just happens. Although good news, it happens less and less with every year of experience. I took maternity leave contracts and came home twice to get through them. You’ll live to travel another day
- Marry someone like you. I did. It helps when you can both travel.
Now that we have kids, we live semi-permanently in a mountain town near some choice skiing cause the schools are good. Your priorities will change, but the benefits of this lifestyle pay dividends.
Good luck and hit me up if you need more tips.
